The Northwest Territorial Mint is a privately-owned mint with seven
locations in the United States of America. It is an international
company that holds the position as the largest private mint in America.
Among its accomplishments, the Northwest Territorial Mint has minted the
Peabody Award. The Peabody Award is issued by the George Foster Peabody
Awards program. The award recognizes distinguished services by radio
and television stations, networks, organizations, individuals and
websites.
The Peabody Awards were first issued in 1940 to CBS Radio, KFRU Radio, WLW Radio, WGAR Radio and Elmer Davis of CBS Radio. Today, the award is issued each year to an average of twenty-five to thirty-five winners selected from more than 1,000 entrants. The Peabody Award judging is a complex evaluation process. It begins with 30 committees or more, each of which consist of University of Georgia staff and faculty members. The committees screen and consider a number of the total entries, discuss the entries and then convene for final deliberation and screening. The entries are judged on their own merits and they can only win through unanimous selection.
The George Foster Peabody Awards program does not issue a set number of awards, which allows all entrants who are unanimously selected to have a chance. The winners are announced during spring of the following year and the announcement was originally through a press release. In modern times, though, the Peabody Awards have been presented on television in effort to raise public awareness to the outstanding accomplishments of the winners.
To be trusted with the minting of the Peabody Award is an honor in its own right. The Northwest Territorial Mint uses only the finest materials, technologies and experts when producing the Peabody award and any other product that it mints.
